A Programme to Eliminate Child Labour in Cotton Field:

48 months beginning from June 2009

Area & Coverage:
120 villages of Jambusar, Amod & Vagra talukas, Bharuch district, Gujarat

Role of VIKAS:
VIKAS is appointed as programme implementation partner to carry out project activities.

Specific responsibilities:
VIKAS would work on following four major aspects to help reduce and eventually eliminate child laboure from the cotton fields.

  • Child protection through setting up and strengthening Child Protection Committees in all 120 programme villages.
  • Ensure access of all children to formal education and skilled based education
  • Ensure access of parents to gain full livelihood
  • Educate women & children about health hazards of working in BT cotton fields.

More About Muskan:
The issue of Child labour is closely linked with poverty of the rural poor families. Facilitating employment & income generation are important part of the development strategy to address the issues of bondage of agriculture laboure families.
As a follow up VIKAS has been closely working with Taluka level Parishads and district administration to ensure availability of wage laboure under NREGA.
Following Activities have been Carried Out:

  • Prepared list of agriculture labourers who are bonded and are willing to work under the programme
  • Identified common as well as individual assets which could be developed under the programme.
  • Facilitated initiation of work in nine villages of Jambusar taluka which benefited 3,000 persons.
  • Created demand in 44 villages and enrolled 4,000 persons.
  • Prepared & got approved proposal worth 1.30 crore for mangrove plantation, wasteland development and
    individual plot development. CSPC is likely to support organisational costs for the initiative.
